The Madness Starts

As you may–or may not–know SDCC has just started and is in full swing. The best thing about SDCC? Exclusive swag. The worst thing about SDCC? Everything else.

Seriously, giving yourself two hours to get into anything?! Is this for real?! And that’s not even going into the headaches of trying to get a hotel room, let alone a badge!

Prime and I have a friend named Dai Atlas–also known as DA–who managed to get into the Con for a few years and nail down some of the exclusive sets and whatnot. But I had no idea what he had to deal with in order to get the badge, get to the convention center and even worse, how long he had to stand in line in order to get those precious pieces of plastic for us. And I’m not even going into the shipping, either!

So DA, thanks for all the hard work. It’s sincerely appreciated. Too bad you couldn’t make it in this year.

I still don’t know how you managed to put up that sort of over-crowding, though.

About Silverwynde

I'm a Transformers fan, Pokémon player, Brewers fan and all-out general nerd. I rescue abandoned Golett, collect as many Bumblebee decoys and figures as I can find and I've attended every BotCon since 1999. I'm also happily married to a fellow Transfan named Prime and we are both owned by a very intelligent half-Siamese cat. Life is pretty darned awesome.

Daiatlas here. You’re welcome. Hopefully the con center expansion will result in me being able to get in again. As for the crowds? It was good that as a kid I went to outdoor markets and flea markets and got acclimated to crowds, just like when Joe and I go to festivals in San Francisco now. Patience is also another virtue. After going in ’08, ’11 and ’13 I’ve devised a checklist to make the trip and experience easier and enjoyable…

    • Use coat check to leave your backpack at. (Added after ’13).
    • Bring rollaway luggage (Haven’t done yet as I get bags at the con like from Warner Bros.)
    • Use Post Office at Horton Plaza (Nearest Post Office to the con center. Went there in ’11).
    • Have green tea bottle (Added after ’11, beverages there aren’t cheap).
    • Carry snacks like Clif Bars with you (Added after ’11, food’s hella expensive in there).
    • Have iPad & iPhone (Added after ’11; laptops are cumbersome to use when in lines).
    • Arriving in San Diego, go *immediately* to the SDCCI line (Added after ’08)
    • Take packaging tape with you (Added after ’11; why buy it when you brought it with you?)
    • Eat El Pollo Loco from the Harborside Blue Line Trolley station (began this lunch in ’13, I brought it back with me to the con. While I ate, I charged up my devices).
    • Have a clipboard (Added after ’11. You still gotta fill out forms and you need a hard surface to write on while on line rides…)
    • Arrive in San Diego THE NIGHT BEFORE. (Added after ’13. It’s no longer good enough to arrive at dawn. People line up *overnight* for lines to HasbroToyShop!)
    • Wear comfortable shoes. (Added after ’08. You WILL walk and stand around a lot).
    • Wear cargo pants or shorts with many pockets. (Added after ’08. If you can’t reach your backpack, you have accessible pockets for stashing essentials and mementos).
    • Wear digicam pouch on belt for quick access. (Added after BC ’13).

Whew! Most importantly, have fun during this getaway. Hope that answered your question. 🙂
