I found this article via Dispatches From The Culture Wars, which is a great blog to read if you have the time. The article itself however, reads like a nightmare: a naturopath nearly let her children die of pertussis. You are reading that right. This woman, who is supposedly a “Board Certified Naturopathic Doctor” refused to give her children any inoculations against pertussis and when they grew ill, she refused to take them to a hospital. It is absolutely sickening to read.
The mere fact that this woman did not have the common sense to seek out any medical attention for her children who were very clearly suffering is bad enough. But her cavalier attitude about the whole incident is breathtaking (emphasis mine):
I just want you to ask yourself… How did people make it through for thousands of years? How did they get through the Spanish Influenza, the Black Plague, fevers and other ailments?
People, your ancestors have used natural remedies since the dawn of time to heal all things. Pharmaceutical creations have only been around for about 150 years. Most prescriptions have spent somewhere around 10 years from start to finish, including testing phases, before being allowed on the market to be used in experimentation on your family. We have no idea what the long term effects are going to be for all of these quick fix medications on our kids.
Here’s the thing: PEOPLE DID NOT MAKE IT THROUGH THE BLACK PLAGUE OR THE SPANISH FLU. PEOPLE DIED. THAT WAS THE NATURAL OUTCOME. In Eurasia, it is estimated that somewhere around 75 to 200 million people died from the Plague. Think about that for a moment. Two hundred million people. Men, women and children. Dead. And I’m willing to bet that the apothecaries who lived in or around these people were prescribing natural remedies that they honestly believed would work and cure the plague. But none of these “remedies” did work. If they had, then the Black Death may have been stopped in its tracks and our history books would be very different than they are now. It’s the same with the Spanish Flu; anywhere from 40 to 100 million died from this and they were strong, healthy people. No, a lot of people did not “get through” these ailments. THEY DIED.
But it’s that last line that really blows my mind. “We have no idea what the long term effects are going to be…” I know of one long term effect: people get vaccines and don’t get fatal diseases, which means that they live longer. I don’t know about you but that’s one “long term effect” that I rather think I like.
