“It’s going to be a long four years,” Prime muttered, his face a mask of disgust. With a sigh, I nodded and stared out the passenger window. We had just heard the news on the radio and everything we had heard regarding the current administration made us want to scream. It’s been slightly over a month, yet it feels like years.
Whether we want to admit it or not, we’re going to need some coping mechanisms. Four years is a long time. So here are a few tips you can use to maintain your sanity over the course of the Grand Nagus’ presidency.
-Block, Moderate and Unfollow
If you have social media, these three steps will help you keep your sanity. If you’re on Facebook or Twitter, block those people with the Pepe the Frog avatars and names like “Deplorable Pete”. If your family members are openly Nagus supporters, unfollow or take a break from them. (Hey, you might be related but that doesn’t mean you absolutely have to be all that friendly to them.) If you blog, enable comment moderation. The last thing you want is the added stress of dealing with some slack-jawed keyboard warrior who thinks s/he is smarter than you because s/he “didn’t vote for Killary”. Head the problem off at the pass now, before you find yourself regretting it. Fighting with trolls is never fun.
-Binge Some Entertainment
So you have that one friend who keeps talking about Doctor Who but you’ve never seen it. Or you’ve just finished your latest comics for the month and want to read something new. Or maybe there’s a movie that you want to see. Or maybe you just want to grab a copy of an old Nancy Drew mystery and give it a read. But considering everything right now, should you?
Go for it! Hop on Hulu and binge a season of Star Trek if you want. Track down a DVD boxset or two of The X Files or find a few of your favorite Saturday morning cartoons that you couldn’t miss when you were a kid. In my area, the local movie theatres run a special on Tuesdays: all shows are priced at five dollars. Find a deal like that in your area and take in a couple of films that you’ve neglected to see. If you’ve wanted to pick up and read the latest Transformer offerings from IDW comics, head to the local comic shop and pick a few up. Grab a good book and spend a some time enjoying it. Yes, reality is tough but escaping it for a little while can help take the stress off you.
-Go Easy On The News
I’m not saying skip the news entirely. Instead, go easy on it: keep yourself informed about current events but take a break from it. Listening to or watching morning and evening news is fine. Listening to Wolf Blitzer on CNN for the duration of your day off? Not a great idea and a surefire way to burn yourself out.
-Go Easy On Facebook and Other Social Media
Facebook is where a lot of people get their news. It’s pretty darned handy but it can also be overwhelming. You will run into some nasty individuals online; Facebook is no exception. So walk away from it every once in a while. Sometimes you have to ask yourself, “Do I really need to engage Kathy Nimitz in Dunghole, Wyoming in a political debate?” Sometimes, it’s best to drop it and move on. Or block the offending party and move on.
-Join a Like Minded Group
Speaking of Facebook, they have a great thing called “Groups”. There are lots of them and you can join up with a one or two. Trust me, the memes alone will make you laugh so give it a shot!
-Donate to Worthy Causes
If the idea of defunding Planned Parenthood irritates you, make a point to give them a donation. Afraid of what may happen to our National Parks? Send your change to the National Wildlife Federation. Want to keep church and state separate? Join FFRF. Concerned about civil liberties? Make a donation to the ACLU. Upset that the current governing body may mess with your gay friend’s marriage? Drop some coin in HRC’s coffers. You are not helpless; make your dollars count.
This can also be a great idea for a Christmas or birthday gift: tell your family you’d rather they donate a small amount of money to a charity or worthy cause in your name. Besides, do you really want to end up with yet another useless gadget in your attic?
-Take a Cute Break
Head over to YouTube, search for kitten videos and waste a few hours. Because cat vids are the cure for what ails ya! (Trust me, I know this for a fact!) Have a pet? Give them extra attention. That will take your mind off a lot of things.
The occasional chocolate bar or bowl of mac and cheese can do wonders for you. Just don’t go overboard with it. You’re looking to treat yourself, not kill yourself with kindness.
-Remember: This Too Shall Pass
We got through eight years of George W. Bush. We can get through this. As long as we keep our heads together, we’ll make it through.
