Today is the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. I could write an impassioned defense of reproductive rights, but I won’t. My words would be hollow. Instead, I will share with you an article that I came across on my Facebook feed: Forced adoptions deserve a proper apology, too. I urge you to read it, because this needs to be addressed. One small excerpt from the article:
“We girls were not allowed to speak to one another about our story. We were also told never to use names, especially last names. They called us tramps and sluts and said that no decent man would ever have us because of what we’d done. I only remember one medical exam in all the time I was there. I only gained twenty pounds, despite eventually giving birth to an eight-pound baby boy. One other thing. We had to whisper, and never, never laugh.”
That part was easy. “There was nothing funny in the home,” Anne recalled.
Lest we forget.
