Retail and food service in a frigging nutshell. Trust me on that.

We’ve had some storms move through our area; Prime and I are fine but it look me multiple tries to fix the internet and get it and the Wi-Fi running. For whatever reason, our computer was fine but the modem took multiple restarts before it finally kicked in and even then, there were some errors while I was using Alexa last night. I couldn’t get the Mobile Walker on GPX+ to work and any and all YouTube videos refused to load. I have no idea as to why. I’m hoping that this is just a minor hiccup.

I have no idea what Amber’s problem is, but she’s been on one hell of a rampage lately. Because of her attitude, I almost dread going into work. On Saturday, when we were tearing the front end apart, looking for a lost kid, she proceeded to tear into one of my co-workers for “not knowing” that the child in question was lost. Here’s the thing: that co-worker told me that the kid was missing and to keep my eyes peeled to see if I could spot him. Even worse? Amber decided to rip into a different co-worker, demanding to know where the kid–whom Amber had found and was leading around herself–had gone. Because apparently it was the fault of my second co-worker that Amber couldn’t keep the hell up with the kid she had found. Or something. I have no fucking clue.

Yesterday, as I was about to do the temperature walk, Amber stopped me and said that I needed to get the damned thing done in twenty minutes. Because we weren’t all that busy, according to her. There’s just one problem with that: on the temp walk, we have to take the time to temp the cold foods in the Service Deli and in the Meat Department. That’s on top of writing down all the readouts of the thermometers on the Deli cases, the Meat cases, the POS Freezers and Cooler, the Bakery cases, the Food Court freezer and coolers, and the Produce shop-in cooler. It’s a lot of writing, to be honest and it can take you upwards of thirty minutes to cover everything and get the walk done and done correctly.

Now, that isn’t to say that I haven’t done the temp walk in twenty minutes or less; I actually have. But the reason why I’ve done that is simply because I was the only one who could do the walk and I had to do it before I left for the day/night. If I was forced to do an abbreviated temp walk, I had to skip some aspects of the safety walk to get everything done. Which is what I had to do Sunday night. I got the walk done in twenty-one minutes, but I was not happy about it in the least.

I have to be honest: I have never gotten along with Amber at all. Something about that woman has set me off since the first day we met. Maybe it had something to do with her thinking that shouting into the Food Court at full volume was funny. Maybe it was just her attitude. Maybe it’s the fact that she has never been nice to me unless she wants something from me, like yanking me into the Food Court to cover unfilled shifts because most of the new hires quit within their first month. (The turnover rate for Food Court is enormous. This is not an exaggeration and I should know; I started in that department and it is absolute hell some days.)

Amber is the only manager that gives me any real trouble; I get along with everyone else, including Dave, who has a reputation for being an ass. But Amber has always given me fits. I don’t know if she just doesn’t like me or if it’s just her attitude that keeps rubbing me the wrong way. It hasn’t gotten any better with time; the day after Prime and I lost Sammy, I was late by about two minutes from my break. I copped to it and admitted that I had lost track of time. Any of the other supervisors would have shrugged it off, but I didn’t get one of the supervisors. I got Amber, who had to sit there and bitch and complain about this incident–Literally the first time I had been late coming back from a break, no less!–for about ten minutes. I couldn’t get a word in edgewise.

Remember, this was the Sunday after I lost our cat. Talk about shitty timing for someone to act completely shitty, especially seeing as how I could have called myself in that day and not even bothered. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if I shouldn’t have done just that. Maybe if I get lucky, Amber will end up being moved to another department and I won’t have to deal with her. If I could be so lucky.

Random thought: when it comes to chicken sandwiches, Burger King’s is one of the better ones out there from a quick serve restaurant, really juicy with good flavor. Considering how I don’t often like a lot of the fare offered at most fast food places, that’s pretty high praise.

About Silverwynde

I'm a Transformers fan, Pokémon player, Brewers fan and all-out general nerd. I rescue abandoned Golett, collect as many Bumblebee decoys and figures as I can find and I've attended every BotCon since 1999. I'm also happily married to a fellow Transfan named Prime and we were both owned by a very intelligent half-Siamese cat, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge on June 16, 2018. We still miss him. But we're now the acting staff of a Maine Coon kitty named Lulu, who pretty much rules the house. Not that we're complaining about that.
