Facebook removed doctors’ fact-check of false anti-abortion video because Ted Cruz complained (from Salon): “Facebook flagged the videos on Aug. 30, BuzzFeed News reported, adding a link to the fact-check next to the videos and notifying followers of the Live Action page that the videos had been rated as false.”
‘Someone’s Gotta Tell the Freakin’ Truth’: Jerry Falwell’s Aides Break Their Silence (from Politico): “In interviews over the past eight months, they depicted how Falwell and his wife, Becki, consolidated power at Liberty University and how Falwell presides over a culture of self-dealing, directing university resources into projects and real estate deals in which his friends and family have stood to make personal financial gains. Among the previously unreported revelations are Falwell’s decision to hire his son Trey’s company to manage a shopping center owned by the university, Falwell’s advocacy for loans given by the university to his friends, and Falwell’s awarding university contracts to businesses owned by his friends.”

Alaska’s Swimsuit Scandal Unfairly Polices Young Girls’ Bodies (from Medium): “A 17-year-old swimmer from Anchorage, Alaska, was disqualified from a race that she won on Friday, because of what officials called a “uniform violation.” Though the teen wore a suit issued by her team at Dimond High School, in accordance with uniform regulations, and it matched the styles worn by her competitors, she was the only athlete who was disqualified. Why, you may ask? Because she was targeted for the way the suit fit her curvier, fuller-figured body.”
A Heavily Pregnant Migrant Crossed the U.S. Border Experiencing Contractions. American Doctors Stopped Her Labor, Then Sent Her Back to Mexico (from Time): “Agents took her to the hospital, where doctors gave her medication to stop the contractions. And then, according to the woman and her lawyer, she was almost immediately sent back to Mexico. There, she joined the more than 38,000 people forced to wait across the border for immigration court hearings under a rapidly expanding Trump administration policy. And her plight highlights the health risks and perils presented by the “Remain in Mexico” program.”
Senator: Mark Zuckerberg should face “the possibility of a prison term” (from ars technica): “Technology companies, Wyden argued, have “done practically everything wrong since the 2016 election.” He said he recently told technology companies: “If you don’t get serious on moderation, you’re going to have a lot of people coming after you.””
Medicaid’s Dark Secret (from The Atlantic): “The trouble began when her mother started showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. For a while, one of Tawanda’s brothers cared for Edna, but he was sick himself and died in 2004. A guardian of the state admitted Edna into a nursing home and signed her up for the state’s Medicaid program, MassHealth. Tawanda was relieved that her mother was being cared for while she was busy arranging her brother’s funeral. But when she arrived in Boston from Brooklyn, where she and her husband had settled, she heard rumors about MassHealth “robbing people of their homes” as reimbursement for their medical bills.”

A woman says her cries for help were ignored as she gave birth in jail. Her story is one of many. (from Vox): “Sanchez was 26 years old and more than eight months pregnant in 2018 when she was admitted to the Denver County Jail on charges related to identity theft. Weeks later, at around 5 am on July 31, she began having contractions. She writhed in pain on a thin mattress as she went into labor, an hours-long ordeal where she continually screamed and pleaded for jail staff and nurses to get her and her soon-to-be-born child to a hospital.
Shortly before 11 am, Sanchez gave birth to a baby boy inside her cell, without any assistance, pain relief, or medical aid. Her ordeal was captured on a surveillance video and shown on a live video feed that jail officials are expected to monitor at all times.”
