By now, you know about the Facebook whistle-blower. She’s been on 60 Minutes. She’s testified before the Senate. Before you ask: no, I didn’t watch the testimony. I didn’t need to do so. There’s literally nothing she could say that would shock me.
I’ve been on Facebook enough. I know that they’re not doing nearly enough to stop the spread of misinformation. They aren’t doing enough to stop bullying. Or harassment. Or doxxing. Or anything like this. The platform is, quite frankly, terrible. But what did you expect from a guy who started this shit to rank college girls on their hotness?
I’m also sure you were well aware of the massive Facebook outage yesterday. No, I didn’t miss that bullshit platform one bit. I wouldn’t have been upset if it had never come back.
As of late, I haven’t been on Facebook as much; I’ve been reading Reddit a lot. Now, Reddit is toxic as hell, but I don’t care. I don’t have an account there and I refuse to get one. So perusing it is relatively safe. I’m not getting caught up in internet drama. I’m done with that bullshit.
But Facebook is a special type of toxic. It’s terrible. There’s so much misinformation and other bullshit that it’s impossible to fight against it. That’s not even getting into the copyright violations that a number of businesses who advertise on Facebook pull. I report them, just like the harassment and bullying but nothing is done. Facebook is getting paid, so they don’t care. They will never care.
I truly hope this is the death knell. I want this to be the end of Facebook. I’m tired of it, tired of social media in general. Hell, this is where I’d rather be. I’ve been on WordPress for over six years and not once have I had to deal with a ban or suspension. It’s like moderation and having some actual, tangible rules works better than algorithms or something.
But don’t tell Zuckerberg that. He’s too busy playing the fiddle while his empire self-immolates.
