Thoughts on the Big Reveal from Pokémon Yesterday

Yesterday morning, there was a Pokémon live stream, that had some information on the current games, DLC that’s in the future, things that are happening in the mobile games, and the like. But it was the last few minutes of the live stream that got very interesting.

Say hello to your little friends.

New Starter Pokémon. We’re getting new games for the Switch later this year. Oh hell yes.

My thoughts:

-The Region is based on Italy, so if we don’t have a city that’s based off Venice and a healing item that’s basically a pizza, I will be very disappointed. For obvious reasons. Also, can we not have an obvious nod to Rome? I mean, that’s pretty much the city of absolute evil, for multiple reasons and I don’t want to see it in a Pokémon game at all.

-The games are Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. I already know which version I’m playing: Prime is a Prime and there’s no way he’s taking anything in a shade of purple, because that’s a Decepticon color. So yeah, I’m pretty much screwed in this instance. Lucky me. -_-‘

-It seems your outfits are different from version to version: there’s red for the Scarlet heroes and purple for the Violet player characters. I have to wonder if there will be other clothing exclusives between the two.

-The Fire Starter is a crocodile. For the love of Arceus, GameFreak, make the final evolution a freaking quadruped, PLEASE. Literally every Fire Starter has ended up bipedal: Charizard, Typhlosion, Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, Delphox, Incineroar, and Cinderace are all bipedal. Every. Last. One. However, Water and Grass have gotten a mix of quadrupeds, bipeds, and even a limbless one with Serperior! Fire? Nope. It has to stand on two legs. Fans weren’t happy with the constant Fire/Fighting dual typing and it was eventually dropped. It’s well past time to drop this one as well. We’re tired of it.

-The games have been described as “open world”. Holy. Shit. I’m now thinking that Legends: Arceus was a dry run and this is how the games will be going forward. Great job, GameFreak!

-The eternal question: Grass, Water, or Fire? Honestly, it’s a tough call. Fuecoco is derpy cute. Quaxly looks like it would be at home in Duckburg! I’m not kidding; that little guy is cute to the point of ridiculousness! We’ve had other duck Pokémon before but the designs didn’t do a lot for me. But Quaxly looks damn near perfect. Then, you have Sprigatito, which is a cat. Cats are awesome and many of the fans are saying that with its personality and coloration, it might be based on a Siamese cat. Siamese cats are awesome. So yeah, it’s a difficult choice but…

-Yeah, I’m going with the cat. I’ll make sure to breed a couple for trading. It won’t be too difficult finding the other Starters for trade. Also, if random trades are still a thing in these games, I’ll probably end up with a complete set after a few blind trades. Hey, it happened on Sword.

-No word yet on a release date or any special preorder bonuses. But I’m thinking it’s probably November. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m glad Prime got a Switch Lite for me. It’s gonna get a hell of a workout this year.

About Silverwynde

I'm a Transformers fan, Pokémon player, Brewers fan and all-out general nerd. I rescue abandoned Golett, collect as many Bumblebee decoys and figures as I can find and I've attended every BotCon--official and non--since 1999. I'm also happily married to a fellow Transfan named Prime and we were both owned by a very intelligent half-Siamese cat, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge on June 16, 2018. We still miss him. But we're now the acting staff of a Maine Coon kitty named Lulu, who pretty much rules the house. Not that we're complaining about that.
